Sartinesi Valincu Taravu
The cradle of Corsican civilisation, this area is home to two-thirds of the ancient stone megaliths to be found on the island. From Taravo, the valley that was once home to the earliest Corsican people, to the beautiful village of Sartène perched in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the gulf of Valinco, the echoes of a glorious yet tumultuous history are everywhere to be found. While the area’s noblility, dating back to the 7th century, would one day give birth to the valiant Viceroy of Corsica Vincentello d'Istria, these lands also witnessed ferocious fighting amongst the peasants.
The low valley of the Taravo river, the plain of Rizzanese and the Ortoo valley, which had been used as farmland since prehistoric times, saw their people move away, seeking refuge in the mountains during the Middle Ages. Fearing barbarian invasions, they returned to the fields only to sow and harvest crops, and when grazing animals. From the 19th century onwards families began to move back to the area, cultivating vines and olive groves and developing a busy agricultural community. The mountainside, densely covered with chestnut trees, was used for rearing pigs and boars. Charcuterie, cheese, wine, olive oil and honey - the perfect marriage of the plains and the mountains!
