The island’s hikers and mountain dwellers all know Roger-Philippe Maurizi and his family, as they’ve probably stopped off at least once at their Bergeries de Capanelle gîte at the foot of Monte Renosu. They will have stayed over or had a local meal, taking advantage of the warm welcome. This place has been in the Maurizi family for several years, and always provides good food and a friendly atmosphere.
What they may be less aware of is that upon regaining the family estate in Petraghje on Corsica’s Eastern Plain, Roger-Philippe Maurizi traded the stove for the press and became an olive grower. “We had this land on the plains and my father wanted to plant fruit trees there, but our mountain activities didn’t give us enough time to devote to that,” explains Roger-Philippe. “We needed a crop that was compatible with our mountain activity, and olive trees stood out as obvious! We educated and trained ourselves with the best olive growers in the region so we could tackle this new agricultural activity, one we really didn’t know much about,” he continues.
Now, Roger-Philippe and his wife are masters of the trade and work on different varieties of olive oil with the same rigour and the same quality requirements that earned them a solid reputation and a Double Gold Medal at the Athena International Olive Oil Competition. A successful pairing with their primary activity!
