Nothing suggested at the outset that Marie-Jo Defendini would become a farmer producing olive oil. Tourism, and particularly hotel management, was her initial career choice.
To this extent, she was not following in her father's footsteps who in the seventies had created the E Strette estate where he had grown clementines. “Even though it hadn't been farmed during the last few years, my husband and I were unable to tear ourselves away from the estate when my father died”, reveals an emotional Marie-Jo Defendini.
The clementine trees had not been tended to for a long time, and therefore produced less fruit, so the option of a replacement crop arose. “The choice of olive trees was an obvious and instant choice! This is a tree that I have always loved” explains the young farmer. After the old specimens were uprooted, 600 new olive trees were planted and now grow on the E Strette estate today. In 2013, after a few years of tender loving care and lots of patience, Marie-Jo's pretty bottles started to be filled with their precious nectar for the first time.
A new estate was born!
