The Clos Marfisi was born almost two and a half centuries ago in 1870! Julie Marfisi is a fifth- generation winemaker, the first woman to own five of the twelve family hectares. “Being in the vineyard resonated within me as some kind of confirmation. When you grow up in such a magical place, it’s difficult to think of leaving it one day!” Julie learned vinification techniques alongside her father, Toussaint, in accordance with ancient traditions. Supported by her mother Madeleine, a trained architect, she also came to understand the administration of the estate. In 2011, her first vintage was released under the name of “Cuvée Julie”, accompanied by a sober and stylised letter “J”.

During Julie’s 7 years of apprenticeship, Mathieu, her older brother graduated from the École des Mines of Saint-Etienne, then worked in computational finance in Paris. He also spent time thinking about his future, his desires, and choices to make, and then came the certainty! Mathieu resigned from his job in Paris and took on some very specific training: a “brevet” or certificate as a technician in oenology, approved in 2014! “‘I’m coming home, tell Dad!’ These were his only words!” Julie smiles. “Our parents never forced us to choose this path, but I can assure you today that they are very happy about our choices!”

Mathieu is now officially at his sister’s side for the vineyards next projects, and those ideas are already bubbling away in the heads of our two young winemakers!
